Derek D’Angelo is the President of the Michigan Council on Economic Education and the Curriculum Development Director at the Foundation for Economic Education. Derek retired from teaching Economics after a 24 year career at Eisenhower High School in Shelby Township, Michigan.

As President of the Michigan Council on Economic Education, Derek has brought innovative programming to Michigan students and teachers to excite them about economic and financial literacy, highlighted by the Michigan Personal Finance Challenge, Money Smart Week Magic Shows for elementary students, an Invest in Girls program, and financial literacy rock concerts for high school students. Derek has made an impact across Michigan, leading the Economics state standard revision in 2019 and crafting legislation and bi-partisan support that led Michigan to become the 14th state to guarantee all students receive a course in Personal Finance prior to graduation.

Derek has traveled around the world to work with teachers and students to increase their understanding and application of economics principles into their daily lives. He has been recognized as the Excellence in Financial Literacy Education (EIFLE) National Educator of the Year and National Association of Economic Educators (NAEE) Rising Star in 2019 before being elected as President of the organization for 2021. He has also won the NAEE Abbejean Kehler Award in 2022 for his use of technology to improve delivery of economic education programs.

Derek serves on boards for Funding the Future, Journal of Economics Teaching, and the Zoning Board of Appeals for the City of Sterling Heights. Derek is a proud graduate of the University of Michigan.
